The longest Expressway of  the country to be even longer



CM tells officials to prepare detailed proposals for the both

The Uttar Pradesh Government is set to expand India’s biggest Ganga Expressway. Led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state government is planning to extend the expressway from Prayagraj to Varanasi as well as from Meerut to Haridwar. The Chief Minister has already directed the concerned department to prepare a detailed proposal in this regard.


In view of the Central Government’s plan to expand highways and expressways as envisaged in the Union budget, CM Yogi Adityanath  at a meeting with senior officials, directed to start preparing the proposal in right earnest. 

If approved, the length of the expressway will increase by 150 kilometres. Presently, the length of the expressway is 596 kilometres which will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 36,402 crores. 

The expansion proposal aims at linking several cities with the expressway, including Meirut, Hapur, Bulandshahar, Amroha, Sambhal, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh  and Prayagraj.         

With the extension of the expressway from Prayagraj to Varanasi, several places in the eastern UP will get connected through the expressway, including Varanasi, Mirzapur, Bhadohi, Sonbhadra and Chandoli, which will pave way for development of industries and tourism in the state.

It is worth mentioning that the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA)  is implementing the expressway projects in the state. Initially, it will a six-lane expressway, which might be extended later to eight.   

With Prime Minister Narendra Modi having set his goal to make Varanasi an export hub and in view of the emphasis on road infrastructure in the union budget, the UP CM has come with the expansion plan for Ganga Expressway, which would enhance eastern UP’s connectivity with New Delhi as well as with other parts of the country. 

The  Yogi Government also plans to extend Poorvanchal Expressway up to Balia and has directed concerned authorities to prepare a detailed  proposal for the same. The under-construction Purvanchal Expressway is originally was to be built from Lucknow to Ghazipur.
