 Kumar___ veteran actor of yesteryears' Hindi cinema


Kumar is best known for his portrayal of Sangtarash (Sculptor) in K Asif's Mughal-e-Azam (1960).


Kumar was born in Lucknow. He belonged to a highly respected Lucknow family of Shia Syeds. His real name was Syed Hasan Ali Zaidi. From film Pooran Bhagat (1933), he became popularly known as Kumar. A personable man, he was considered the most well dressed and polished person in the Indian film industry. His acting and dialogue delivery had an individual class, which is evident in Mughal-e-Azam, and in many films including Kamal Amrohi's Mahal (1949) where as the father of the accused, he implores the barrister to advocate his case well. As Haji Sahab in Nek Parveen (1945) and as Madhubala's father in film Tarana (1951), his performance was par excellence.


His other notable films include Yahudi Ki Ladki (1933), Najma (1943), Doosri Shadi (1947), Daaera (1953), Gul Bahar (1954), Shree 420 (1955), Lal Quila (1960, Shama (1961), Jhumroo (1961), Razia Sultana (1961), and Yeh Dil Kisko Doon (1963).


Kumar married a very well known Jewish Bollywood actress of her days, Pramila and both of them established their own film company, called Silver House, making films like Naseeb, Jhankar, Bade Nawab Sahab (1944) and many more. His daughter from Pramila was Naqi Jahan, who was a most stunning beauty, and later participated in a Miss India contest.
